Dutch Apple Pie

John requested apple pie today. We did some research online to find the best recipe. We ended up using the Joy of Cooking recipe. This is from different combination of recipes.

Recipe:

5 Granny Smith Apples
2 tBsp lemon juice
3/4 c sugar
3 tBsp flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

Peel and cut the apple thinly.
Put in bowl. Add lemon juice, sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Mix thoroughly. Set aside.

Pie crust
2 1/2 c flour
2 sticks butter- cut into pieces
1 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 c shortening
1/4 c cold water

Put flour in food processor. Add butter. Pulse until combined. Add sugar, salt and shortening. Slowly drizzle water until ingredients are incorporated. Do not over mix.
Take 1/2 of the pie crust. Refrigerate if the crust is too soft. Put half of the crust on the 8-inch pie plate.

Neatly arrange sliced apple on the prepared pie crust. Pour the rest of the apple mixture juice in the pie.

Crumble
6 tbsp melted butter
2/3 cup flour
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

In a bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add melted butter. Mix ingredients until incorporated. Put this mixture on the top of the pie.

Put pie in 350 degrees oven. Bake for 45 mins to 1 hour. Pie should be done when the apple is soft.

Leave the pie for 1-2 hours to cool off. Apple pie filling will not be runny when it's cooled off.

Top pie with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
